"Can I buy you a drink?"

Dr. Whale is a practicing medical and surgical doctor in a small town called Storybrooke. He is known by most in the town to be a bit of a lecherous womanizer, but he presents himself as a professional when he's on the job. Up until the curse over the town was broken (pre-curse), he led a mostly unremarkable life as one of the town's most recognized physicians at the local hospital, and spent his time off chasing after a date (or, to probably be more precise, a lay). He has an "inflated sense of self" to the point that it can be called a "god complex" by the town psychologist, and yet he feels persecuted and misunderstood by his fellow townspeople. Whale's paranoia in this could not be fully explained until the curse on Storybrooke was broken, and he was revealed to be none other than the infamous Dr. Frankenstein.

"So small minded. I need my powers to transcend the limitations of your magic."

Victor Frankenstein was born to a noble family in The World Without Color. His mother died when he was younger. Victor became interested in chemistry and old scientific texts, believing he might find the ability through them to resurrect the dead. He was right, but not in the way he wanted to be. After his father cut off his research funds, Victor turned, in desperation, to grave-robbing the recently deceased. His dear younger brother, Gerhardt, perished from a gunshot wound after he had come to stop Victor, and while the two escaped from a graveyard. From that point, Victor became wholly obsessed with reviving his brother, solely blaming himself for Gerhardt's death.

Rumpelstiltskin appeared to him before his brother's death, offering Victor money in return for his secret. After Gerhardt's death, The Dark One appeared again to collect the information, but Victor fretfully explained that Gerhardt's heart had been too weak to survive the procedure - it had burnt up in his chest. Rumpelstiltskin made a deal with him to get a magic heart from The Enchanted Forest in return for Frankenstein's help in convincing Regina that there was no hope in reviving her dead lover.

The heart worked, and Gerhardt was revived... but he wasn't the same. After presenting Gerhardt to their father, who claimed Victor had made his son into a monster, Victor was disowned and attacked by his father. Gerhardt, in an attempt to defend his brother, killed their father and left Victor realizing that things had gone very, very wrong. After the incident, Victor planned to kill his creation by shooting him in the head but, despite Gerhardt's blatant and begging encouragement, he couldn't go through with the deed.

"I wanted my name to stand for Life, but... everyone just thinks it's the name of a monster. I guess they're right about that. Rumpelstiltskin says that magic has a price, but from where I'm sitting, it seems science does too."

Post-Curse Whale is still in the process of coming to terms with his alternate persona, Victor Frankenstein, and the horrific results of his attempts at resurrecting the dead. He is a man who is dedicated to science, and would deplore magic entirely if not for the fact that he needed it so desperately. He is inclined to give his life in Storybrooke a genuine chance, but his past still haunts him, and probably always will.
